getting to the point.

The Little One, being the eldest, can spell the number nine.

"N...I...N...E" she said to me.

To which Wee Small responded "you just write 9 and that's it!"

There is no mucking about with Wee Small.

Very sensible. Sums are tricky enough without needing to worry how to spell them. Mixing letters and numbers just leads to nasty things like algebra if you're not careful...

I totally agree. When spelling numbers and sums the little ones can end up with such possibilities as "nine plus water" or "five take away carrot" - which are just a littl bit harder to work out.

Now I always thought I was good at algebra and arithmetic, but I can't manage "nine plus water" or "five take away carrot". Perhaps if you spelled them differently...

Yes I think the little ones may have stumbled upon a new branch of mathematics. The little ones always spell them differently each time. Sometimes they use their own made up letters to spell them.
